I hold a bachelors degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1983) and a PhD degree (1987) in Biochemistry at the Chemistry Institute, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, under the mentorship of Prof. Maria Helena Juliani with a scholarship from FAPESP. I continued my research as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Saint Louis University, Saint Louis, USA (1987-1989), under the supervision of Prof. Claudette Klein when I was awarded with a CNPq fellowship. From 1987 to 1990 I worked in the Biotechnology Center at Instituto Butantan, São Paulo. Since 1991 I have a permanent position in the Department of Biochemistry at Institute of Chemistry, University of Sao Paulo and became a full Professor in 2008. In 2011, I was a visiting researcher in the lab of Steve Lindow at University of California, Berkeley for 6 months with a grant from FAPESP. In 2017, I was nominated as member of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences. My research field is biochemistry, molecular biology and genomics of bacteria and bacteriophages. For several years, the research group I lead has investigated the virulence and adaptation mechanisms of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which colonizes and causes diseases in various plants such as orange, grape and olive trees. On another front, we investigated the diversity and dynamics of microbial communities in natural and engineered environments using metagenomic approaches. More recently, the scope of research in our group has been broadened to include the discovery and molecular characterization of bacteriophages with potential application in phage therapy and the study of mechanisms involved in phage-bacteria interaction.
