A graduate of the University of Miami, he earned a Masters degree in Performance and a Doctors degree in Composition, the later at Campinas State University, Sao Paulo, Brazil, while focusing extensively on polyrhythmic improvisation and composition. Because of his research on rhythmic studies, Coelho associated to Ronan Guilfoyle, a major figure on the Irish jazz scene, to put together an organization called IRSA International Rhythmic Studies Association, dedicated to the sharing and dissemination of information and knowledge regarding the study of rhythm, particularly in regard to jazz, improvised, and other creative musics. Each year IRSA has an annual meetingin which practioners in the field of improvised rhythmic techniques get together to share ideas, play and learn about the latest developments in the field of rhythmic studies.He can be heard regularly performing on tenor and soprano leading his musical projects: David Liebman-Guinga-Coelho Trio, MC4+, MCRD 4teto, 4teto.ORG, Kyabatt Quartet, and Trio Contrapunto. Coelho has shared the stage with a wide range of muscians, from jazz such as David Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Phil Markowitz, Vincent Gardner, Ed Sarath, Gene Perla, Ronan Guilfoyle, Ron Miller, Gary Keller, Phil DeGreg, Mats Holtne, Cliff Korman, to brazilian and others such as Hermeto Pascoal, Guinga, Caetano Veloso, Sizao Machado, Felipe Salles, Sergio Barrozo, Xavier Perez, Felipe Lamoglia, Yaniel Mattos, Rodrigo Dominguez, Ale Demogli among others.
