Denise Mafra

She holds a degree in Nutrition from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) (1997), a Master's degree (1999), and a PhD (2001) in Food Sciences from the University of São Paulo (USP). She completed a Post-Doc at the Department of Nephrology at Hôpital E. Herriot in Lyon, France (2007-2008 - CAPES), and at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden (2017 - CNPq), as well as at the University of Glasgow in Scotland (2021-2022 - CNPq). Currently, she serves as a Full Professor at the Faculty of Nutrition and the Postgraduate Programs in Medical Sciences and Nutrition Sciences at Fluminense Federal University (UFF), along with the Postgraduate Program in Biological Sciences (Physiology) at UFRJ. Her experience encompasses Nutrition and Nephrology, focusing primarily on topics such as oxidative stress, inflammation (evaluating nuclear transcription factors - Bach1, Nrf2, NLRP3, and NF-kB), intestinal microbiota, and Food as Medicine for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease. Since 2009, she has coordinated the Renal Nutrition Outpatient Clinic at the Faculty of Nutrition at UFF. She is a recipient of the Scientist of Our State-FAPERJ scholarship and coordinated the Capes-Cofecub Project (Comité Français Évaluation de la Cooperation Universitaire et Scientifique avec le Brésil) in Brazil between 2012 and 2015 with Prof. Denis Fouque, and was selected again in the Capes-Cofecub-2019-2024 Notice. She is a Council Member of the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism and a member of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). Additionally, she is on the Editorial Board of International Urology and Nephrology, PLOS One, and Nutrition Research. She serves as Editor of BMC Nephrology (Clinical Research) and Theme Editor for Nutritional Disorders of Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation (NDT).
