Civil Engineer from the University of Pernambuco (1983), Master in Soil Mechanics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1986), PhD in Geotechnics from the University of London - Imperial College (1994) and postdoctoral degree from Arizona State University (2008) . He is a professor at the University of São Paulo and works at the Institute of Geosciences and at the Polytechnic School of USP. He is deputy coordinator of the graduate program in Mineral Resources and Hydrogeology at the Institute of Geosciences. He is a member of the Deliberative Council of the Engenho Ruínas São Jorge dos Erasmos National Monument. It develops research projects with industry and public development agencies, and its main focus is on the following topics: Slope stability, earth dams, unsaturated soils, effect of climate on geotechnical works, coverage of waste landfills, experimental studies of field and laboratory, behavior of mining tailings, flow in porous media.
