Birthplace: Brazil

Dr Ricardo Codinhoto is an architect qualified in Brazil with practical, teaching and research experience. Ricardo studied at the State University of Londrina (BSc Architecture and Urban Planning), the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (MSc Civil Engineering) and the University of Salford (PhD Design Science) where he also worked as an academic. Ricardo joined the University of Bath's Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering in 2015. Ricardo holds a Senior Lecturer position within the University of Bath and he is the Director of Studies for the MSc Modern Building Design. He undertakes teaching and supervision at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Ricardo?s current research interests include Building Information Modelling (BIM) applied to Design, Construction and Facilities Management, the design of healthcare facilities particularly focused on evidence-based design for wellbeing and environments for older people. He is also active in a number of research initiatives related to Design Theory, Lean Construction, Building Information Modelling Implementation and Healthcare Facilities Design, Construction and Maintenance and Project Management. Research Ricardo?s research is focused on advancing design theory, practice and education. On the theoretical side, his research is focused on methods that support design cognition and problem solving. The application of the principles of the mathematical method of analysis and synthesis and the use of scientific evidence within design (evidence-based design) are topics where he has been developing research. On the practical side, Ricardo?s research has two strands: one in building information modelling applied to facilities management (BIM FM) and how the knowledge acquired in FM can be used in early design stages. The other relates to design for health and wellbeing. Both strands focus on supporting improved design practice. In addition, Ricardo has conducted research related to the application of Lean Design and Construction principles in real cases. In the last ten years, Ricardo has been developing research through EPSRC funded centres (SCRI and HaCIRIC), ESRC, MRC and NIHR. The impact of Ricardo?s research work is the result of excellent relationship within the political, industrial and professional domains. His work has influenced policy generation and supported design and construction project management teams with the implementation of new design practices. Examples of projects includes: Salford Royal Foundation Trust Linking building and service design; Government Office for Science Foresight project on Mental Capital and Wellbeing 3Ts Hospital Redevelopment - Brighton Evidence-based design and Benefits Realisation Salford City Council and UHSM Improving environments for people with Dementia Manchester City Council Town Hall Complex Project and SRFT BIM for FM Salford Institute for Dementia International interdisciplinary project (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
