Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Instituto de Química (IQ)  (Institutional affiliation for the last research proposal)
Birthplace: Brazil

Graduated in Chemistry, Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters, USP (1962), D.Sc. (Biochemistry), USP (1969). Assistant Professor, Dept. of Chemistry, FFCLUSP (1965-1969), temporary professor, UNICAMP (1969-1970). Assistant Professor (1969-1979), Free Docent (1979-1983), Adjunct Professor (193-1990), and Full Professor since 1990, Institute of Chemistry-USP. Associate Researcher, 1972-1973, National Research Council of Canada, Visiting Scientist, NRCC (1970-1972, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980), Banting Institute, University of Toronto (1974), National Biomedical ESR Center, Medical College of Wisconsin (1977), Max Planck Institüt für Biophysikalische Chemie, Göttingen (1982), Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (1997, 2000, 2001, 2002), Visiting Professor, University of Havana, Cuba (2004). Her research focuses mainly on membranes, especially model membranes. Her laboratory was the first in Brazil to make liposomes and to investigate the structure and dynamics of lipids in different model membranes, as well as their interaction with biologically/pharmacologically active compounds, such as peptides (antimicrobial, hormones, fragments of G-protein coupled receptors, fragments of cytolytic toxins), and other compounds (local anesthetics, polyene antibiotics, anticancer drugs). She has studied the effect of these compounds upon lipid molecular organization and dynamics in model membranes, having developed methods to determine partition coefficients and to investigate the effect of membranes upon reaction kinetics. Her studies also examine the effect of membrane binding on conformational properties of peptides and pore-forming toxins. For this purpose, her laboratory makes use of spectroscopic techniques, especially, electron paramagnetic resonance (the spin label method), circular dichroism, and fluorescence. Honors and Prizes: Editorial Board of Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1984-1987, Member of the Organizing Committee of the IX ISMAR Meeting, Rio de Janeiro, 1986, Member of the Steering Committee, Biology and Medicine Division, International Society of Magnetic Resonance, 1986-1989, Member of the Consulting Committee, XIII International Conference on Magnetic Resonance in Biological Systems, Madison, 1988. Invited by the 3rd World Academy of Sciences to the International Conference on the Role of Women in the Scientific and Technical Development of the 3rd World, Trieste, 1988, Member of the International Organizing Committee of the 11th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution, Jerusalem, 1996, Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, 1997, Member of the IUPAB Task Force for NMR in Biology, 2002, Member of the IUPAB Task Force for Spectroscopy in Biomedicine, 2002, Medal of the Order of Scientific Merit of the Brazilian Presidency, 2002, Visiting Professor, University of Havana, 2004, Rheinboldt-Hauptmann Prize, Institute of Chemistry-USP, 2004, CAPES-Scopus Prize in Biochemistry, 2009. In 2010 the III International Workshop on Spectroscopy for Biology was held to honor of her contribution to Science,. She was honored by the undergradute Chemistry students, ministering the Aula Magna at the beginning of the school year and during the Chemistry week in 2018. In 2018 she also presented the USP Conference commemorating 60 years at USP. She made 40 presentations at international meetings and 16 at national meetings. She presented 42 seminars in international institutions and 49 in national institutions. She supervised 16 graduate students, 8 post-doctoral fellows, and ca. 30 undergraduate students. She published 141 original papers in high quality journals, was author/co-author of 31 book chapters/meeting annals, and has 1 patent. She has ca. 5000 citations (Web of Science). Her h-index on the Scopus base is 38. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
