Her research focuses mainly on membranes, especially model membranes. Her laboratory was the first in Brazil to make liposomes and to investigate the structure and dynamics of lipids in different model membranes, as well as their interaction with biologically/pharmacologically active compounds, such as peptides (antimicrobial, hormones, fragments of G-protein coupled receptors, fragments of cytolytic toxins), and other compounds (local anesthetics, polyene antibiotics, anticancer drugs). She has studied the effect of these compounds upon lipid molecular organization and dynamics in model membranes, having developed methods to determine partition coefficients and to investigate the effect of membranes upon reaction kinetics. Her studies also examine the effect of membrane binding on conformational properties of peptides and pore-forming toxins. For this purpose, her laboratory makes use of spectroscopic techniques, especially, electron paramagnetic resonance (the spin label method), circular dichroism, and fluorescence. She was honored by the undergradute Chemistry students, ministering the Aula Magna at the beginning of the school year and during the Chemistry week in 2018. In 2018 she also presented the USP Conference commemorating 60 years at USP. She made 40 presentations at international meetings and 16 at national meetings. She presented 42 seminars in international institutions and 49 in national institutions. She supervised 16 graduate students, 8 post-doctoral fellows, and ca. 30 undergraduate students. She published 141 original papers in high quality journals, was author/co-author of 31 book chapters/meeting annals, and has 1 patent. She has ca. 5000 citations (Web of Science).
