Holds a bachelor's degree and a professional certificate in Psychology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1972-1973), a master's degree in Linguistics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1975), a PhD in Linguistics from Brown University (1980). Had a two-year internship at Bell Telephone Laboratories (1978-1980). Holds a postdoctoral certificate in Comparative Epistemology from Collège de France (1990). Has experience in the areas of Linguistics and Speech and Language Technology, especially Psycholinguistics and Phonetics and Phonology, having worked mainly on the following topics: speech synthesis and recognition, dynamics in adult phonetics-phonology, and dynamics in child phonetics-phonology. A pioneer in Laboratory Phonology, co-directed the first Speech and Language Technology group in Brazil. Published four books discussing the relationship between the physics and the grammar of speech. Retired on 07/30/2022 and has lately been devoted to the pragmatics of speech sounds, as well as to epistemology and sociology and politics of the speech and language sciences.
