Carlos Mazzillli received his undergraduate Civil Engineering degree from the University of São Paulo(1975), MSc degree in Structural Engineering from the University of São Paulo (1979), PhD degree in Structural Engineering from the University of London (1982) and Habilitation degree in Solid Mechanics from the University of São Paulo (1988). He was admitted as a faculty of the University of São Paulo in 1976, where he has been subsequently Reader, Lecturer, Associate Professor and Full Professor, this latter position since 1992. He was the Head of the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering at Escola Politécnica, University of São Paulo, from 1994 to 1998; Chairman of the Graduate Programme in Structural Engineering at Escola Politécnica, University of São Paulo, from 1985 to 1987; Research Chairman at the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering at the Escola Politécnica, University of São Paulo, from 1991 to 1997 and Chairman of the Computational Mechanics Laboratory at Escola Politécnica, University of São Paulo, from 1989 to 1993. He was engaged in a post-doctoral programme at Universitaet Karlsruhe, in Germany (1989), and was a Visiting Professor at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1990) and Michigan State University (2000), in the United States of America; at the University of Aberdeen (2006 and 2008), in Scotland; and at the Università Politecnica delle Marche (2006, 2013, 2016 and 2017), in Italy. He was appointed Visiting Researcher at the Università Politecnica delle Marche after an international public contest during the period january 2016 through march 2016. He has been a member of the American Academy of Mechanics (AAM) since1994. He has been an 'ad hoc' reviewer of CNPq, CAPES, FAPESP, FAPERJ, FACEPE, etc. He acted as a member of the Editorial Board for the journals Nonlinear Dynamics (1993-1997) and Meccanica (1994-1998). He has also been reviewer to a number of scientifical journals, such as Nonlinear Dynamics, Meccanica, Computers & Structures, International Journal of Nonlinear Mechanics, Journal of Vibration and Control, etc. He organised several scientifical congresses, especially those of the Pan-American Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics series and, in particular was Co-Chairman of PACAM III in São Paulo (1993). He has served in the Steering Committee for PACAM Congresses, from 1994 till 2007, and as the Regional Director for the Central and South America, from 2006 till 2007, both honorary positions for the American Academy of Mechanics. From 2006 and 2008, together with Prof. Marian Wiercigroch of the University of Aberdeen, was responsible for a research project under the joint programme of scientific co-operation of the Royal Society of London. He manages, since 2010, the academic cooperation agreement between Escola Politécnica of the University of São Paulo and the Università Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona,Italy).From 2011 to 2012 he presided over the USP Sectorial Evaluation Commission in charge of the academic evaluation of faculty members in the Engineering I area (Civil, Environmental and Food) . His area of expertise is Civil and Offshore Engineering, focusing on Mechanics of Structures, and his main research topics are: non-linear statics and dynamics, finite-element method, vibration control, non-linear vibration modes and reduced-order models.
