Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ) (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal) Birthplace: Brazil
Professor Dr. Diogo Costa holds the Chair in Beef Cattle Production at ESALQ, University of São Paulo. His academic background is in pasture agronomy and animal production, with a particular focus on ruminant nutrition. Diogo grew up on his familys farm in Brazil, surrounded by livestock. His passion for cattle production led him to pursue a degree in Agronomy at the University of São Paulo (USP) (19992003). In his first year, he joined CPZ (Clube de Práticas Zootécnicas), an internship program focused on ruminant production, where students are responsible for managing the universitys farm operations. This experience sparked his early involvement in research and extension, which has continued to develop throughout his career.Diogo completed his Masters degree at USP (20052007), evaluating the use of supplements for growing beef cattle grazing intensively managed tropical pastures, with a focus on animal performance under different grazing and supplementation strategies. His PhD research at the University of Queensland (UQ) (20082013) addressed the nutritional management of cattle within the northern Australian beef industry context. He later completed a postdoctoral project at USP (20132015), again focusing on grazing management and supplementation strategies for beef and dairy cattle, followed by a second postdoctoral fellowship at UQ (20182020), where he studied nitrogen recycling mechanisms in tropically adapted beef cattle.Dr. Costa has always been fascinated by the complexity of the soilplantanimal interface. He also worked at CQUniversity as a Senior Researcher, contributing to projects involving precision livestock technologies and the evaluation of methane mitigation strategies in both feedlot and grazing systems.Working with cattle production and applying technology to improve livestock management is a central theme in his research. Dr. Costas main goal is to remain closely connected with producers, helping to identify their needs and deliver practical, science-based solutions to the livestock industry.
