Mario Luiz Mascagni

CV Lattes

Birthplace: Brazil

Mario Luiz Mascagni completed his master's degree in Geological Oceanography at the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo (IOUSP) on August 28, 2012. He is currently a doctoral candidate in the Postgraduate Program in Geosciences (PPGGEO) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Provisional title of the thesis: Morphodynamic adaptations of estuaries to climate change. The theme of the thesis involves the development of Machine Learning (ML) models for processing multispectral satellite image data, with applications for Satellite Derived Bathymetry (SDB) studies. The maps resulting from the bathymetric inversion will be used as boundary conditions and data assimilation for calibration of numerical models in estuarine systems (Delft3D Flexible Mesh). Expected thesis defense date: August 5, 2026. He has over 15 years of experience in the environmental consulting and coastal engineering market, participating in and coordinating projects involving remote sensing and computational numerical modeling of hydrodynamic processes, waves, sediment and pollutant transport in coastal seas and rivers. The last 5 works registered with the Brazilian Oceanography Association (AOCEANO), through Technical Qualification Declarations (DHT) were listed below: (1) simulations of the reach of the turbidity plume in the Doce River, generated by dredging operations in the Risoleta Nevez Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir, silted up after the Mariana tragedy - MG (Samarco); (2) simulations to estimate the useful life of the reservoir and ideal locations for water intake for iron ore processing, in the Maravilhas III tailings dam, Itabirito - MG (Vale S.A.); (3) simulations of the erosion potential and eventual collapse of the dikes of a submerged pit containing material highly impacted by the Cubatão Petrochemical Complex - SP, associated with the Piaçaguera Canal deepening project (Vale S.A.); (4) simulations of the impact on the coastline and sedimentation/silting of the submerged sector of the Barra do Riacho port complex - ES, influenced by the construction works of the Barra do Riacho Waterway Terminal (TABR - Petrobras); and (5) long-term simulations (50 years) of the evolution of the coastline and beach profile to support the calculations of the burial quotas of the Sergipe Profundo Gas Pipeline off the coast of Barra dos Coqueiros - SE (Petrobras).
