Ricardo M. Xavier completed the Faculty of Medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), medical residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia (USA) (2 years) and Rheumatology at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, and doctorate in Immunology at the University of Shimane (Japan) in 1994. He is currently Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine/UFRGS, developing his activities in the Rheumatology Service of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, including coordination of the Autoimmune Diseases Laboratory, and Head of the Service of Laboratory Diagnosis. It carries out research activities in the area of rheumatology, with an emphasis on the pathophysiology and clinical aspects of autoimmune diseases. His research lines include: genetics of inflammatory and autoimmune rheumatic diseases, pathophysiology of muscle wasting and cachexia associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, research on the efficacy of potential new anti-rheumatic drugs and immunomodulators at in vitro levels, in experimental models and in clinical trials. and epidemiology of the clinical manifestations of autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
