He holds a PhD in Anthropology from the National Museum/UFRJ (1995). He completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of California San Diego/UCSD (2006). He holds a masters degree in philosophy of education from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (1990) and in Theology from PUC-Rio (1994). He is a CNPq researcher (1998-present). He is a full professor at the State University of Campinas (2021-present) and a researcher at the Laboratory of Anthropology of Religion - LAR/Unicamp (2021-present). He was a full professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1996-2024) and a researcher at the Center for Religious Studies - NER/UFRGS (1997-2024). He was president of the Association of Social Scientists of Latin America (2007-2009), Coordinator of the Anthropology and Archaeology Area of CAPES (2008-2011) and Director of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology (2012-2014). Topics of interest: religion, environment, Catholicism, pilgrimage, tourism.
