Carlos Alberto Steil is master in Theology (PUC/RJ-1984) and in Philosophy of Education (FGV/RJ-1990) and PhD in Anthropology (MN/UFRJ-1995). Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1996 current). Visiting Professor at the Federal University of São Paulo (2019-2021). Researcher at CNPq. (1998 current). He holds his postdoctoral degree at the University of California - San Diego (2006). He was president of the Association of Social Scientists of Mercosur (2007-2009); Coordinator of the Area of Anthropology and Archeology of CAPES (2008-2011); Director of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology (2012-2014); Coordinator of the Center for Religion Studies (1996-2003) and editor of Horizontes Antropológicos (1998-2005), Ciencias Sociales y Religión (1999-2007) and Debates of NER (1998-2016). Throughout his academic career he has researched topics such as: pilgrimage, tourism, Catholicism, New Age, spirituality, social movements, religion and politics. Among his publications are the books O Sertão das Romarias (1996: Sílvio Romero Award) and On the Nature Trail (2015, coautoria) and the organization with other colleagues of the collections: Religião e globalização (1997), Maria entre os vivos (2012), Religiões e cultura (2009), Caminhos de Santiago no Brasil (2011), Cultura, percepção e ambiente (2012), Transnacionalização religiosa (2012), Religião e espaço público 2012 e Entre trópicos (2018).
