Rafael Chaves Souto Araujo

Bachelor's degree in Physics from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2004), Master's degree in Physics from the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (2006), and PhD from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2010). He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Photonic Sciences in Barcelona and at the physics departments of the Universities of Freiburg and Cologne. He is the leader of the Quantum Information Research Group (www.iip.ufrn.br/qiqm) and vice-director of the International Institute of Physics (IIP-UFRN) in Natal. He was a grantee of the Serrapilheira Institute, the Templeton Foundation, and FQXi, and is currently the principal investigator of a project funded by the Simons Foundation. He was named "Outstanding Referee" by the American Physical Society in 2020 and serves as Divisional Associated Editor (Quantum Information) for Physical Review Letters. He is an affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and a 1D productivity fellow of CNPq. He is also a professor at the School of Sciences and Technology (ECT-UFRN) and a permanent faculty member of the graduate program in the Department of Physics at UFRN. He has experience in the fields of physics and machine learning, with a focus on quantum computation and information, primarily working on the following topics: quantum entanglement and non-locality, open quantum systems, quantum information processing, quantum cryptography and communication, foundations of quantum mechanics, experimental implementations, artificial intelligence, and causal models.
