Holds a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1980), M.Sc. in Computer and Information Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania (1987) and from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1984) and a Ph.D. degree in Computer and Information Sciences from University of Pennsylvania (1992).
