The AdS/CFT correspondence and gauge/gravity dualities, in their "top-down"form, relate holographically string theory in a gravitational background with a quantum field theory on the boundary, relating strong vs. weak coupling. In this project, we will study the worldsheet action of string theory on parallel plane, or ``pp'' waves, obtained in a certain limit of gravitational spaces used for the AdS/CFT correspondence, and show that by discretization, we obtain a quantum mechanical action that is obtained in the context of the Heisenberg spin chain for spins in a condensed matter system.
