graduate as Electronic Engineer from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1975), master's in Electrical Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1976) and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology (1981). He is a Professor at Electrical Engineering Program, COPPE / Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Has experience in Electric Engineering, focusing on Power Electronics applied to Power Systems, with emphasis on Instantaneous Power Theory, Active Filters, FACTS and Renewable Power Sources. He was admitted, in class of "Comendador", to the National Scientific Merit Order, in 2005. In 2013 he was the recipient of the IEEE PES Nari Hingorani FACTS Award and was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Engineering. In 2015 he was elected as member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. In 2016 he received the "Friend of the Navy Medal" and the InRio Award Personality of the Year, 2016 Edition, In 2017 he was elevated to IEEE Fellow and received the Marechal Cordeiro de Farias Medal from the Escola Superior de Guerra. In April 2020, he was decorated by the Emperor of Japan with "the Order of Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon". In 2022 received from IEE - Japan the award "One step on eletroctechnology - Look back to the future". (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
