I am a Senior Researcher at the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing, Petrópolis, Brazil. I have been trained as a mechanical engineer and applied mathematician. My field of specialization is topological asymptotic expansions of shape functionals with PDEs constraints in singularly perturbed geometrical domains. The main topic of current research is the theoretical development and application of the topological derivative method to shape and topology optimization, inverse problems, imaging processing, multi-scale material design and mechanical modeling including damage and fracture evolution phenomena, whose scientific activities are developed in collaboration with researchers from Brazil, Argentina, Austria, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Tunísia, United Kingdom, Uruguay and USA. I am co-author together with Jan Sokolowski of the first book on topological asymptotic analysis: Topological Derivatives in Shape Optimization. Interaction of Mechanics and Mathematics Series. Springer (2013), 434p. I have published more than 90 research papers in peer reviewed international journals. I am currently associated editor of the journals Latin American Journal of Solids and Structures and Control and Cybernetics of the Polish Academy of Science. Finally, I am acting as peer reviewer for about 70 scientific journals and for many research agencies, including CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ, DFG (German Research Foundation, Germany), ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche, France), Llywodraeth Cymru (Welsh Government, UK) and HRZZ (Croatian Science Foundation, Croatia), RGC (Research Grants Council, Hong Kong).
