Nilson Antonio da Rocha Coimbra

Currently, a Bioinformatics Researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo (FM-USP), focusing on research and the development of innovative solutions for diagnosing infectious diseases. Holds a PhD from the Interinstitutional Bioinformatics Program at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2019), with a thesis developed as part of a sandwich program at the Université de Sherbrooke (20162018), where he created phylogenomic methods for the evolutionary reconstruction of horizontally transferred genes.Completed a Masters in Bioinformatics at the Federal University of Paraná (2015), with a dissertation focused on the development of pipelines and computational tools for the analysis of biological nitrogen fixation genes in diazotrophic organisms. Also holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from Estácio de Sá University Belém Campus.A certified instructor by The Carpentries, he serves as a council member of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) in the Vice Presidents of Education board and as a co-editor of the book Bioinformatics and Computational Approaches in Viral Genomics and Evolution. He is also a member of the National Institute of Science and Technology for Artificial Intelligence in Bioinformatics.As the founder of the Brazilian Bioinformatics League, he received the Innovation Award from the Brazilian Association of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (AB3C Innovation Award, 2020) for his contributions to building and fostering scientific communities.He has extensive experience in bioinformatics, specializing in genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, variant calling, tool development, and education in the field.
