Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Instituto de Química de São Carlos (IQSC)  (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal)
Birthplace: Brazil

He has a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of São Paulo (1989), a Master's degree in Analytical Chemistry from the University of São Paulo (1994) and a PhD in Interunits in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of São Paulo (2000). He is currently a PhD professor at the University of São Paulo. He has experience in Biomedical Engineering or Materials, with emphasis on Biomaterials and Biocompatible Materials with the aim of: - Development of biomaterials or composites from their extractions of waste or agro-industrial co-products, purifications and characterizations of biomacromolecules, such as collagen or gelatin, fibroin or sericin of the cocoon of silkworm, hyaluronic acid and corn zein from animals and other natural polymers (of animal or plant origin) for the purpose of adding value to these agroindustrial residues or co-products; - Chemical and/or physical modifications of natural proteins and/or polysaccharides for interaction or not with animal or microbial cells for possible medical, cosmetic or food application in various formats, such as tubes, particles, sponges, films, wires or membranes; - Extraction and purification of enzyme proteins for their immobilizations in solid supports for their recovery and reuse in non-biocatalytic chemical processes of high cost or large volume of the production of final chemicals of high added value; - Biodegradation of polymeric biological materials or not using microorganisms or enzymes; - Physicochemical and chemical characterization of the materials obtained; - Interaction study of mesenchymal stem cells and developed biomaterials; - Obtaining biopolymers or bioplastics (proteins or polysaccharides) for the production of biomaterials or biodegradable and compostable bioplastics.
