Dr. Lima joined the Institute for Advanced Studies (IEAv) in 2002. He is currently a senior researcher in optics and lasers in the Photonics Division. Before arriving at the IEAv, Dr. Lima served as an assistant researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Institute of Materials. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from the University of São Paulo in 2007, which focused on laser material processing. His qualifications include an M.Sc. with honors in Materials Science and B. Sci. in Physics. Dr. Lima received several prizes for his extensive research in laser science and technology, and was able to perform experimental and programming activities in several laser workstations and analytical equipment. He worked on projects with many companies, such as Von Moss/Swiss Steels, ThyssenKrupp, Usiminas, Petrobras, Volvo, Alcan, Gerdau, Vale, Mercedes, Magneti Marelli, Bosch, and CSN, as well as participating in incubation and micro-enterprise promotions. He also participated as a consultant for two French Brazilian companies. He is highly proficient in English, Spanish, and French in addition to his mother tongue. He is a member of the Council of Millennium Factory Institute. He was an ad hoc consultant at the Center for Competitiveness and Innovation, Brazil. He is a visiting professor at the Federal University of Uberlandia (UFU), Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL), and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). He is currently a coordinator of seven RD units at IEAv and an associate professor at the Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica (ITA). His laser materials processing graduate course at ITA will completed 20 years in 2024. Dr. Lima actively participates in several associations, such as the Brazilian Metallurgy, Materials and Mining Association, Brazilian Material Research Society, Optical Society of America, and Atlantic Forest Foundation. Currently, he has dedicated his efforts to actions in favor of the environment, notably through study commissions and actions against deforestation. He received the German government's Green Hydrogen RD Award in 2022, and is a member of the EU project Green Chemical Engineering Network for upscaling sustainable processes. Dr. Lima is active in various social movements, including proactive actions for basic sanitation and training low-income youths to access the university. A strong scientific profile of high-impact-factor peer-reviewed journal publications was part of his quailifications. In September 2024, he coordinated five large national RD projects and two international projects, published 128 papers, supervised 60 student works, organized more than two dozen scientific meetings, and applied for four patents.
