Leonardo Bacelar Lima Santos

Holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the Federal University of Bahia, a Master's degree, and a PhD in Applied Computing (CAP) from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Completed postdoctoral studies at Humboldt University (Germany) in Physics, with an emphasis on Stochastic Processes and Complex Networks. He is a senior researcher at the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters (CEMADEN), a permanent faculty member and member of the CAP-INPE Graduate Program Council, and a collaborator in the Computer Science program at UNIFESP. His multidisciplinary research, guided by practical societal problems, seeks theoretical innovations to develop new methods capable of generating results and impacts, from citations to operational products. He focuses on creating risk scenarios, considering threat components (using Artificial Intelligence) and vulnerabilities (based on Complex Networks). He developed the concept of (geo)graph, which has original applications in meteorology and urban transport and mobility networks, and has since been further developed in Geographic Neural Networks. He has published over 50 journal articles and has over 1000 citations (h-index 18, i10-index 38). He has collaborators and has been invited to give lectures at institutions in Brazil and abroad. He has supervised over 20 undergraduate research projects, 9 master's theses, and 5 doctoral dissertations. He currently supervises 2 master's theses, 14 doctoral dissertations, and 1 postdoctoral researcher. He received an award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research as both a student and a supervisor. He coordinated 2 projects at CNPq, participated in a FAPESP Thematic project, and has 4 registered software programs. He currently coordinates a CNPq project with a budget of approximately 1 million reais. He represented Brazil at the BRICS Forum of young researchers for his work on AI in Hydrological Modeling. He served on the organizing committees of several events and was Program Chair of the Brazilian Geoinformatics Symposium in 2022. He was one of the creators and, for several years coordinator of the Thematic Committee ''Mathematics, Climate and Sustainability'' of SBMAC. Today, he is the Regional Coordinator of SBMAC. He has experience in editorial work, from books published by Springer Nature to Special Editions in journals, and is currently an Associate Editor at Nature/Scientific Reports.
