Graduated in Medicine from the University of São Paulo (1979), completed a residency in Ophthalmology at the Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo (19801982), a PhD in Ophthalmology at the University of São Paulo (1992), and obtained the title of Livre-Docente (habilitation) in Ophthalmology from the same institution (1997). He completed one year of a clinical fellowship in Neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Connecticut, Farmington, USA (19821983), and another at the University of California, San Francisco, USA (19831984), the latter under the supervision of Prof. William F. Hoyt.He is currently Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo, head of the Neuro-ophthalmology Service at the Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine, USP, and Deputy Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Ophthalmology at the University of São Paulo. He also serves as advisor in the Graduate Program in Ophthalmology at USP. He has supervised 23 completed doctoral theses, 6 undergraduate scientific initiation students funded by research agencies, and 6 postdoctoral fellows. At present, he supervises 6 doctoral students, 2 scientific initiation students, and 2 postdoctoral fellows.He has published 295 full scientific papers, 6 books, and 164 book chapters. His published articles have received 3,601 citations in the Institute for Scientific Information (h-index = 33), 4,077 citations in Scopus (h-index = 35), and 6,049 citations in Google Scholar (h-index = 42, i10-index = 131). He serves as a consultant for FAPESP, CNPq, and CAPES, Associate Editor of the Journal of Ophthalmology, Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia, and Einstein, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia. In addition, he acts as an ad-hoc reviewer for several scientific journals, including: Acta Ophthalmologica, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Clinical Psychiatry, Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia, BMC Neurology, BMC Ophthalmology, Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Clinics, Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, Eye, Graefes Archives for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Refractive Surgery, Journal of Vision, Nature Reviews Neurology, Neuro-ophthalmology, New England Journal of Medicine, Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Ophthalmology, and PLOS One.Educational activities include teaching medical students, Ophthalmology and Neurology residents, and fellows in the Neuro-ophthalmology and Orbital Diseases services of the Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine, USP, over the past 40 years. He has played an active role in the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology as Secretary, General Secretary, and member of the teaching (former coordinator) and scientific committees of that institution.In addition to his work as a professor and researcher, he practices as an ophthalmologist, with emphasis on Neuro-ophthalmology and Orbital Diseases, focusing mainly on the following topics: disorders of the optic nerves (particularly optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, papilledema, and compressive neuropathies), disorders of the optic chiasm and retrochiasmal pathways, oculomotor palsies, Graves orbitopathy, orbital tumors, and differential diagnoses in neuro-ophthalmology, including unexplained visual loss and diplopia. He works in his private practice and in several hospitals, including Hospital Sírio-Libanês, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, Hospital Nove de Julho, and Hospital Santa Cruz, in São Paulo.
