Graduated in Biological Sciences from the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (1990), master's degree (1992) and PhD in Biological Sciences-Biochemistry from the Institute of Chemistry at the University of São Paulo (1996). Post-doctorates at the Institute of Chemistry at USP (1996-1997), Shizuoka University in Japan (1997-1999), and the Dept. of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University in the USA (1999-2002).He worked as a FAPESP Young Researcher and professor in the Cellular and Molecular Biology graduate program at UNESP in Rio Claro (2003-2009). He became an Assistant Professor at UFSCar in 2006 and obtained his Habilitation (2014) from the Chemistry Institute of the University of São Paulo (2014). He is currently a Full Professor of Biochemistry in the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics Department of the Federal University of São Carlos (Sorocaba campus), where he works in the graduate programs Evolutionary Genetics and Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Environmental Monitoring, and Biotechnology. He founded and served as coordinator of the Biotechnology and Environmental Monitoring graduate program in 2012 and between 2018 and 2020. He leads the research group "Bioluminescence and Biophotonics" through CNPq. He is a visiting researcher at the Nat. Inst. of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST, Tsukuba, Japan), Univ. Vanderbilt (Nashville, TN, USA) and the University of Bologna (Italy). He was president (2017-2019) and is currently vice-president of the International Society for Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence (ISBC). In 2024, he organized the XXII Int. Symp. Bioluminescence Chemiluminescence in Foz do Iguaçu. He researches bioluminescence, luciferase enzymes, biological chemiluminescence, and their applications in biosensors, bioimaging, and bioanalysis.
