Dr. Cairo L. Nascimento Jr. received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU, Uberlândia-MG, Brazil) in 1984, the M.Sc. degree in electronic engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA, São José dos Campos-SP, Brazil) in 1988 and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Control Systems Centre, University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST, now University of Manchester, UK) in 1994. Since 1986 he has been a lecturer with the Department of Systems and Control, Division of Electronic Engineering, ITA, Brazil, where he is now a full Professor. He is the co-author of the book ''Artificial Intelligence in Control and Automation" (in portuguese) published in 2000, has published more than 150 articles in scientific journals and conferences and was the chairman for the 1999 Fourth Brazilian Conference on Neural Networks. He has supervised (or co-supervised) to completion 11 Ph.D. and 45 M.Sc./Professional Master students, is an IEEE Senior Member and has worked as a consultant for governmental agencies and private companies in Brazil. His current research interests include control systems engineering, mobile robotics, autonomous aerial/ground/surface and underwater robotic vehicles, 3D mapping/reconstruction/inspection of large structures such as adduction tunnels for hydropower companies, hardware and software for embedded real-time systems, application of artificial intelligence techniques to real world problems, fraud detection and Prognostics and Health Management (PHM).
