Biologist, with a bachelor's and teachings degree in Biology from the University of São Paulo (1991). Lawyer, graduated in Law from the University of São Paulo (2023). He holds his Master's and Doctor's degrees in Biological Sciences (Botany) also from USP (1993, 1999), then a postdoc at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew (1999). He is Full Professor at the Department of Botany, USP; and advises graduate students in two lines of research: Phanerogams Systematics, with emphasis on Monocorts diversity and evolution; and Science Education, in particular Biodiversity Education, Botany, and Teacher Training. He is the coordinator of the Cajuí Group: Coproduction of Knowledge, Sustainability and Biodiversity Education, working in coproduction with the people who inhabit the Brazilian quilombos and campos rupestres. e-mail: ptsano@usp.br (Source: Lattes Curriculum)

Myrtaceae occur on all continents except Antarctica. Estimates of numbers of Myrtaceae world-wide suggest between 4600-5800 species. The tribe Myrteae contains the neotropical species of Myrtaceae and shows remarkable taxonomic complexity, thus resulting in difficult identification of their taxa.
