Maira Rocha Machado is an associate professor of law at the Law School of Fundação Getulio Vargas in São Paulo (FGV DIREITO SP). She has been teaching and writing on criminal law and correctional studies for more than 17 years, having published in some of the most important international and national journals in the field, such as Law and Social Inquiry, Criminologie, New Studies Cebrap, Brazilian Journal of Criminal Sciences, and the Brazilian Journal of Public Policies. Maira has done extensive worked on the Carandiru Prison Massacre in Brazil, employing empirical techniques to study the acts and responsibilities of policy and judicial officials during and after the massacre. Mairas research has been commissioned by UNDP and the National Council of Justice where she developed extensive work on prison reform and improving criminal law practices of judges and Courts. Maira holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy and General Theory of Law from the University of Sao Paulo and a Bachelors degree in Law. She has served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Canada Research Chair in Legal Traditions and Penal Rationality at the University of Ottawa and was also a visiting researcher at the University of Barcelona and at New York University.
