Luiz M. G. Gonçalves holds a degree in Computer Science from the State University of Rio de Janeiro in 1993 and a PhD in Systems and Computer Engineering from the Computer Graphics Laboratory (LCG) of COPPE-UFRJ in 1999, including a two-year internship at the Perceptual Robotics Laboratory of UMASS, Amherst, MA, USA. He is a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Automation at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, working in the Graduate Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering (CAPES score 5), of which he was coordinator for 3 terms (almost 6 years). He is a Senior Member of IEEE and current President of the IEEE Northeast Brazil RA-CS Joint Chapter, since 2020. His research interests include various aspects of Computing, working mainly with Perceptual Information Systems for Robotics and also in Graphics Processing, including topics such as robotic vision (main interest), computer vision, computer graphics, GIS, geometric modeling, virtual reality, computer animation, image processing, and also in Educational Robotics. He was a member for two years (2002-2004) and president for another two years (2004-2006) of the Special Committee on Computer Graphics and Image Processing (CEGRAPI) of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC). He is one of the main researchers and articulator in the field of Robotics in Brazil, where he created the Brazilian Robotics Competition (2003), the Brazilian Robotics Symposium (EnRI/SBR, 2004), the Educational Robotics Workshop (WRE, 2008), the Special Committee on Robotics of the SBC (2005, being Chair from 2005 to 2010), the South American Robocup Committee (2005-2011, being Chair from 2005 to 2011 when it was dismished by Robocup Federation), the Robocup Brasil (2007, being a member of the Council from 2007 to 2023), the Brazilian Robotics Olympiad (2007, being Coordinator in 2008 and 2011, with financial support from CNPq). In the area of #8203;#8203;Educational Robotics, he is the researcher with the highest number of publications, worldwide, according to Scopus and Web of Science (measured on July 10, 2025). Recently, he encouraged the Robotics community to create the Brazilian Robotics Society (created in July 2024), of which he is a member of the Council, for the 2024-2026 biennium.
