Dr. Lamartine Guimarães has a bachelor?s in physics and a Master in Nuclear Engineering from Brazilian high education Institutions, 1981 and 1984, respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, in 1992. He is a professor and a consultant in several technical aspects of the Nuclear Technology. He worked at the Nuclear Energy Division (ENU) at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IEAv) from 1984 to 2022, when he retired. IEAv is located in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil. In 1997, he became the Division vice-head. And in 2005 he became the Nuclear Energy Division Head and remained in this position until 2021. For many years he has worked with development of reactor component simulation models, such as: reactor cores, steam generators, pumps, pipes etc. Also, he has been working with applied artificial intelligence and is a professor of this discipline in a graduate level. He has been a professor of physics and several related disciplines for more than 25 years in Engineering and Computer Science undergraduate level. For the last ten years he has been interested in applying nuclear technology for heat, electricity and propulsion generation in space. He is the conceiver of the TERRA project, which aims at developing nuclear energy and space technologies in Brazil. In 2009 he was awarded the Santos Dumont Merit Medal by the Brazilian Air Force Command. He is a member of several scientific and technical organizations, such as: American Nuclear Society, Brazilian Physical Society and Brazilian Association for Nuclear Energy.
