Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem (IEL) (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal) Birthplace: Brazil
This profile may seem strange to those who are accustomed to the traditional. Milene is not a professional who adheres to conventionalisms, therefore her trajectory needs to be explained. Milene earned her bachelor's degree in Linguistics from Universidade Estadual de Campinas in 2006. Stimulated by her interest in politics and business, upon finishing her bachelor's degree Milene decided to study her MBA at Escola Superior de Administração, Marketing e Comunicacação de Campinas (ESAMC ). The MBA was of fundamental importance for understanding corporate dynamic, as well as the political and economic reasoning of government and private institutions. Equipped with a degree in Linguistics and an MBA in Human Resources, Milene ventured to the much-anticipated course in Rhetoric in the United States . Milene chose to study at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, home for major scholars of presidential rhetoric (see, for example, Thomas Burkholder , David Henry , Sara VanderHaagen, and Donovan Conley). After two years in the American desert, Milene received her Master of Arts in Communication Studies also earning the two most important awards of the Department of Communication at UNLV: Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant and Outstanding Graduate Student. In August of 2013, Milene started her first semester in the Ph.D. program in Rhetoric and Politics at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. There Milene develops research projects on presidential rhetoric, rhetorical criticism, visual rhetoric, rhetoric of protest and control, as well as research on the role of social media in contemporary civic engagement.
