Abstract

Sulfated pillared clay (AP-S) was tested in the catalytic conversion of glycerol by esterification reaction with caprylic acid (octanoic acid, OA). The clay was treated with concentrated fuming sulfuric acid. The presence of sulfur as well as an increase in the acidity of the solid demonstrate the suitability of the sulfatation process. The best conditions for the esterification reaction with OA were OA:glycerol molar ratio 8:1, 423 K and 5 wt% catalyst. Total glycerol conversion was achieved after 5 h and yield of 27, 43 and 30 % respectively for monocarpylin, dicaprylin and tricaprylin were obtained. (AU)
