Abstract

Abstract The effective involvement of users in the design process brings several benefits to the process, including capturing users' real needs and legitimising design decisions. However, methods and tools to enable co-design are still incipient, which hinders the dissemination of this approach. The aim of this study was to search for methods and tools already employed in co-design with users, through a literature review and case studies in architectural design companies. The results highlight the importance of methods and tools, and that the main methodological issue in co-design is to promote a common language in the design, so that both users and design professionals can understand and express themselves. They also highlight that co-design is important in the initial stages of the design process, where the methods and tools are used. This study contributes to enriching the available literature on the subject and to disseminating it among architects, designers and researchers, facilitating communication between users and the professional team in the design process, thus improving the quality of the process and the designed building.
