Abstract

Every multi-parameter conformity assessment presents some risk due to measurement uncertainty, that may be increased or decreased when data are correlated. Correlation may arise from how the various parameters are measured in the laboratory. The aim of the work was to propose a flexible spreadsheet method to determine the `between component metrological correlation' due to relevant shared analytical steps. The general principles of the determination of `between components metrological correlation' were implemented in a spreadsheet method that allow to determine the combined uncertainties and a covariance/correlation matrix of the output quantities as function of the input quantity values, their respective standard uncertainties, and the correlation between input quantities. The correlation values provided by the spreadsheet method were similar to those obtained using Monte Carlo simulations. However, the spreadsheet method has a great advantage, since it requires much less computational resources, easily adapts to studied measurement models and it allows to identify the larger source of strong correlation between components. The metrological correlation may significantly affect the risk of false conformity decisions and should be considered in the conformity assessment of multi-parameter products or items when the analytical procedures involves the sharing of relevant analytical steps.
