ABSTRACT The intensification and uncertainties of contemporary displacements multiply tension issues and the establishment of barriers, constituting concerns that challenge reflections and discussions. This article focuses on the presence of the Portuguese in the process of expanding frontiers and the colonization in the countryside in the State of São Paulo (19th and 20th centuries), addressing different aspects of the experiences of these immigrants.
