Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop and characterize a pulp capping multilayer membrane with chitosan, regarding physicochemical properties of radiopacity, pH, calcium release, and biological properties of cytocompatibility. Human pulp fibroblasts (HPF) exposed to membrane solutions were subjected to MTT assay for viability analysis. All developed and tested membranes showed alkaline pH, satisfactory calcium release, and radiopacity higher than 3 mm Al. The cytocompatibility assay demonstrated the highest scores of viability at 48 h, without statistical difference between groups overtime. Although these results were compatible with properties of adequate pulp capping materials, further in vivo and clinical studies are needed to determine the suitability of these membranes to be applied in human teeth.
