Abstract

Connarus is a primarily pantropical genus comprised of approximately 85 species. Most of them are distributed exclusively in the Neotropics, where wide distributions are common for the Amazonian species, whereas those of the Atlantic Forest are more restricted to a given site. One example of the latter case is Connarus beyrichii, whose distribution and morphological identity remained obscure for a long period, given its probable rarity, the limited number of available specimens, their age and incomplete collection information. Thanks to modern botanical collections, C. beyrichii is now known to occur in montane formations along Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, southeast Brazil. An enhanced description of this species is here presented, as well as photographs, a distribution map and discussions on its distribution, habitat, conservation status and taxonomy. Finally, a lectotype is here designated for a synonym of C. beyrichii. (AU)
