Abstract

Virtual sensors are software entities that allow the estimation, through models, of critical variables in a given environment. Metrics can be modeled computationally to estimate the values measured by a sensor without installing it physically in the specified location. The monitoring and control of its variables by the edge are of great importance, as they are directly related to increased productivity. This article presents the idea behind virtual sensors, discusses some challenges and trends, presents such sensors' modeling for estimating values, and gives results based on a Smart Farming case study. The results show that the virtual sensors' estimated values are very close to reality, which shows that our method can be used with very high confidence. (AU)
