Abstract

This work presents the experimental assessment of the vibrating modes of a flexible beam that mimics the movement of fish swimming. The system actuation was carried out by Macro-Fiber Composite (MFC) patches in a bi-morph configuration. Initially, the first three modal shapes were acquired using impact tests. Then, these modal shapes were verified by exciting the system using the MFC patches and sinusoidal signal at the resonance frequencies. Finally, polynomial functions have been obtained for mathematically approximating these modal shapes using the least-squares method. These functions can be used in model-based control strategies.
