Regenerative chatter is a major limitation to the productivity and quality of machining operations; therefore, strategies for its suppression should be considered and evaluated during the machine design process. It is known that structural damping has a proportional relationship with stability limit. In this way, in order to increase the stable depth-of-cut the energy dissipation should be increased. A first numerical and experimental study on the chatter reduction using piezoelectric material was performed during the projects CNPq 470314/2010-9 and FAPESP 2011/17166-3 (IC grant). During this work, it was experimentally verified that the coupling between the first vibrating modes of the tool-holder causes significant nonlinearities in the process. Such nonlinearities should be studied and considered in order to reduce chatter in turning processes. Therefore, the first step of the present research project is to evaluate numerically and experimentally the nonlinear phenomena that occurs during the turning process. In a second step, alternatives to reduce chatter using piezoelectric material embedded at the tool holder and shunt electronic circuits should be proposed. The equipment required for the development of this proposal will be acquired during the project CNPq 479342/2012-1. It is expected that the adoption of such strategies to reduce chatter can make the process of turning economically more productive and efficient.
