Abstract

Magnetic poly(N-vinylcaprolactam)-based nanogels were prepared by inverse miniemulsion polymerization (W/O) using Span 80 as an oil soluble surfactant and NaCl as a lipophobe in the aqueous phase. Poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) is known for its biocompatibility and its thermo-responsive property, which make it an excellent candidate for elaborating nano-carries for controlled drug delivery systems. The different parameters influencing the particles hydrodynamic diameters (D-H) such as the surfactant, iron oxide and cross-linker content, as well as the type of initiator, were previously investigated using dynamic light scattering (DLS). The incorporation of iron oxide nanoparticles in the PNVCL matrices was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The efficacy of incorporation of Fe3O4 in the hybrid nanogels was estimated by termogravimetric analysis (TGA), which showed the increased iron oxide content in the final product as the magnetic nanoparticles concentration used in the recipe increased. The evolution of DH as a function of temperature revealed the thermally-sensitive behavior of the hybrid nanogels, as well as the magnetic hysteresis loop measurements showed their superparamagnetic characteristic. Finally, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of the final hybrid nanogels confirmed their size at nanoscale, with a spherical morphology, containing the iron oxide nanoparticles preferentially distributed inside the particles.
