Abstract

This paper describes the process of designing and building two scaled models (1:2 and 1:1) of an AUV. These models were built and instrumented with load cells, accelerometers and inclinometers to measure hydrodynamic forces and moments in five degrees of freedom during captive model tests in a towing tank. The 3D printing technique was fully used to build the model sections and appendages and every step necessary for the design and construction is described, including structural reinforcements, finishing techniques, different infilling options used and impact of these settings in the results. All parts were 3D printed at research labs at NTNU (Trondheim, Norway) and Institute of Marine Engineering of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-INM) (Rome, Italy). (AU)
