Abstract

Abstract With global pressures on social and environmental problems in agricultural commodity chains in Brazil, there is a greater stimulus for differentiation among agribusiness actors operating in the country. Through a gradient, this article analyzes five currents of these actors’ positions concerning social and environmental issues. By associating each current with a specific actor, this work also examines the extent to which the positions are translated into effective political actions. The empirical sources come from corporate documents, long-term participant observation in political forums andinterviews with leaders of business associations. The results demonstrate the widening of programmatic divergences among those actors, but also evidence considerable contradictions in this process. (AU)
