Abstract

Processing metallic alloys by laser-based powder bed fusion, one of many additive manufacturing technologies, depends on several factors related to the material's physical properties and metallurgical behavior. Although specific processing conditions vary with machine characteristics, the overall processability of alloys can be comparatively assessed by analyzing the phenomena involved during melting and solidification. We explored the processability of different grades of steel, Ti-, Al-, and Cu-alloys and propose a methodology to determine the processability of other alloys. An energy parameter is proposed based on the absorbance of the laser wavelength, besides thermal and physical properties of the alloy, and some processing parameters. (AU)
