Abstract

Characteristics of inhabitants, living conditions, communities with agglomerations of people, underlying diseases (such as diabetes), injecting drug use, and frequency of antibiotic use contribute to the selection of resistant bacteria. We continue to fail to contain the spread of resistance genes, which already pose a threat to the health of populations. Currently, multidrug-resistant microorganisms are already responsible for infectious conditions acquired in the community. An important example is MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), which represents a serious public health risk worldwide due to the rapid spread and diversification of pandemic clones with increasing virulence and antimicrobial resistance. MRSA are one of the leading causes of nosocomial or health care-related infections (Healthcare-associade [HA] -MRSA), and the prevalence of this microorganism in community-associated (CA) -MRSA has increased. . However, the studies are heterogeneous in terms of objectives and methods and do not allow a complete and coherent picture of CA-MRSA epidemiology. This gap is particularly relevant in our country, where data on CA-MRSA are scarce. Therefore, this study proposes a greater investigation on the epidemiology of S. aureus and MRSA in insulin-dependent diabetic subjects and the elderly in the home care or institutionalized, to determine the nasal and oral prevalence of these microorganisms and the risk factors for colonization.
