Abstract
A number of technologies have emerged these last few years, among these: Cloud Computing, virtualization and advanced network traffic measurement techniques. Nonetheless, their combination sometimes results in unexpected challenges. A case in the point is the application of existing packet and flow level measurement techniques in virtual networks. More specifically, it has been observed that timestamping of packets and flows suffers from additional inaccuracy that results from the overhead operating system clock access. When collecting timestamping, an almost perfect measurement environment is assumed. But this is not the case. Network nodes consist of different hardware and virtualization operating systems. Concurrent virtual machines and hypervisor access to the network hardware affects time stamping delays. This project undertakes a number of measurement experiments to identify and mitigate some of these bottlenecks under different CPUs, VMs, memory and packet inter-arrival times. (AU)
