Abstract

The Laurencia complex has been shown to be highly diverse in number of genera and species, currently comprising eight genera: Laurencia s.s., Osmundea, Chondrophycus, Palisada, Yuzurua, Laurenciella, Coronaphycus and Ohelopapa. Most of its representatives show high phenotypic plasticity, making difficult to identify genera and species based only on morphological characters leading to identification errors, misapplied names and constant nomenclatural changes. Molecular studies have generated important proposals of generic and specific circumscriptions. However, phylogenetic relationships between genera and species are not well resolved with the use of only one molecular marker. However, intergeneric and interspecific phylogenetic relationships are not well resolved using only one molecular marker. The present project aims to continue the study of the diversity and phylogenetic relationships of the Laurencia complex (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta) in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean. In this context, the project proposes the use of the DNA Barcoding technique for species delimitation, and the use of multi-gene markers for phylogenetic purposes, aiming to generate a more robust phylogeny for this complex. The study of the Laurencia complex in the Atlantic has been developed in partnership with Mexico, Spain (Canary Islands), Portugal (Azores Archipelago and Madeira Island), USA (Florida) and Venezuela. In this next phase of the project, we will expand the area of study for Costa Rica and give greater coverage to the Gulf of Mexico. This international cooperation is fundamental to the understanding of the Laurencia complex in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as its geographical distribution and phylogenetic affinities. (AU)
