Abstract

The project aims to contribute to the knowledge of the diversity and phylogenetic relationships of the Laurencia complex (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta) in the Atlantic Ocean. The Laurencia complex has proven to be highly diverse in number of genera and species. However, most of their representatives show high level of phenotypic plasticity, hindering the identification of genera and species based only on morphological characters and hence leading to errors in identification and constant nomenclatural changes. In this context, the project proposes the use of the technique of "DNA Barcoding" and comparison of DNA sequences of other molecular markers for phylogenetic purposes, combined with morphological study of the species. Molecular studies have generated important proposals of generic and specific circumscriptions and have contributed to clarify the phylogenetic affinities of this complex and its classification system. The study of the Laurencia complex in the Atlantic has been developed in partnership with Mexico, Spain (Canary Islands) and Portugal (Archipelago of the Azores and Madeira). This project will carry forward the study of the diversity and phylogeny of the Laurencia complex in tropical and subtropical Atlantic, expanding the study area to the U.S. (Florida) and Venezuela. This cooperation is fundamental to understanding the diversity of the Laurencia complex species in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as its geographical distribution and phylogenetic affinities. (AU)
