Abstract

The path to the identification, selection and development young athletes is a complex and highly selective and exclusive process that requires multidimensional approaches based on scientific evidence. Thus, interpretation of growth, biological maturation, performance and impact of training loads in young athletes (children and adolescents) need to consider biological determinants and contextual influences of training and competition, not only on the reliability and validity of the measurements, but mostly on the consideration of appropriate statistical approaches that are able to deal with the complexity of the problems. In particular, the complex biological and contextual interactions in the interpretation and prediction of performance in youth sports indicate the need to consider multilevel modeling. The purposes of the present research are: (i) to characterize growth and maturity status, and indicators of sport readiness in young athletes within different contexts of training and competition (local club level, professional club, center of high performance); (ii) to examine the influence of training contexts on the development of sports´ commitment, attitudes and development of functional, technical and tactical capacities in young athletes; (iii) to examine changes in functional, technical and tactical capacities and behavioral characteristics within competitive season exposure across the developmental path to sport expertise, considering the influence of growth and maturation as well as training context; (iv) To study the sports coach, his / her competences and abilities to conduct the pedagogical process in the training of young athletes.
