Abstract

The production of freshwater and marine ornamental fish is considered a profitable agribusiness that generates millions of dollars annually. About 90% of the ornamental freshwater fish marketed in the world are produced in captivity, while most of the marine are still collected from the environment. Brazil has a great diversity of marine species, with many endemic organisms, with high demand and commercial value. Within this context of technological challenges, the project aims to enable the sustainable production of two ornamental marine and native species: Centropyge aurantonotus and Holacanthus tricolor through the development of techniques to produce juveniles in the laboratory. In the international market, wild H. tricolor are traded in the amount of 50 - 70 US $ / unit and C. aurantonotus specimens are rare and can reach even higher values. To make possible the reproduction and larviculture of the two species, the project will count with the technical team specialized in marine fishes and with available technical information. In addition, the project aims to evaluate the economic viability to produce these two species. The achievement of the objectives of PIPE Phase 1 will allow obtaining data that will support the structuring of a commercial production project of these species and the preparation of the proposal for Phase 2 of PIPE.
