Abstract
The growing of the global biotechnology market in the last decade is notorious. The market is valued at $270.5 billion in 2013, and is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 12 percent due to increasing demand for new solutions. In addition, the increasing valuation of the R&D&I investments by adoption of industrial protection for new technologies has resulted in a steady increase in patent deposits in such area. Considering this scenario, the study proposes to analyze the dynamics of the technological efforts of the Biotechnology sector in in the World with emphasis in Brazil. To perform that, the approach of social networks analysis (SNA) will be applied to build and study the cooperation networks among companies, universities, and research institutes as well as to map out the technological routes that have resulted in the development of patented inventions in biotechnology segments. As a result of the research, it is expected to map of the main cooperative networks, technological routes, promising technologies and their key markets, by analyzing the dynamic evolution in the last 20 years of the key players in these networks. From these potential results, it will be possible to monitor the trends of emerging technologies and, in this way, contribute to the improvement of public policies aimed at encouraging Science, Technology, and Innovation (S&T&I) in Brazil and also to enhance the selection and analysis of the research, development and innovation (R&D&I) projects in biotechnology in organizations.
